British Youth Championships 2018 - Report
Two of our promising Youths qualified for the BWL British Youth Championships held at Luton, at the beginning of February.
Owen Millard competed in the U17-69Kg category and faced stiff opposition from lads that were mostly one year older than himself. Undaunted, Owen rose to the occasion and produced an outstanding 6 out of 6 good lifts to create new Personal Bests in both Snatch 65Kg and Clean& Jerk 85Kg, to total 150Kg. Coach Adam stated that ‘at a bodyweight of 65Kg this was a significant achievement and bodes well for a medallist position next year’.
James David (U17-85Kg) followed with a creditable 4th place performance of 60Kg Snatch and 74Kg Clean & Jerk.
NLWLC Open Competition Sat 2nd December
Our usual Benchmark Competition was absorbed into a BWL endorsed Open meeting event, at short notice, so that a group of aspiring lifters could gain qualifying totals for next year’s English Championships, before the deadline. With a full compliment of qualified Officials and a hastily constructed 4m square platform we were able to conduct a successful competition that places the Club in a good position to host Regional competitions next year. In the Benchmark competition we congratulate our 6 Club Members (Josh, Anna, Laura, Lily, James and Liam) who all achieved PB’s, with particular applause for Josh, Anna and James for scoring 6 out of 6 good lifts! The (U17) Millard brothers (Open Comp) both progressed their total PBs to Owen 140Kgs and Kyran 162Kgs. Many thanks to the Officials and helpers.
The London Youth Games Competition 2017
The London Borough of Enfield asked us to field a representative competitor on July 9th at Crystal Palace.
James David (U15) had the right qualifications and was keen to grasp the opportunity.
Most of the other youth competitors were older than James but this did not worry him and he dealt with the pressure with great composure and determination.
James has been training regularly with dedication and focus, which is paying off:
He achieved 5 out of 6 good lifts, managed a Personal best of 56 Kgs Snatch and a 65Kgs Clean & Jerk (narrowly missing 70Kgs) to total 121Kgs – by far the best he has ever done in competition – well done.
Mike Bennett – Coach & Club Secretary.
Youth Success at Southern Schools Championships
Our aspiring youngsters continued to glorify themselves at the Southern Schools Championships held at Oxford, last Saturday, by taking 3 gold place medals and 1 silver. Check out the details on our Competitions page.
Crystal Palace Senior Competition
Daniel Gavin, who recently joined our club only five months ago, made an amazing gold medal performance with his first senior competition at Crystal Palace. Representing the Club in a regional qualifier, he came first in his grouping with a total of 184Kg. He weighed in at 80.5Kg, snatched 82Kg and Jerked 102Kg. He has been working extremely hard with Coach Adam on technique and strength development.
Well done Dan.
Workshop Event Report – February 2016
Our first Workshop event hosted by Mehmed Fikretov was a resounding success.
All our 6 platforms were well occupied with intermediate and some novice lifters who were literally put through their paces with his expert guidance.
The lifters worked through a prescribed session of Snatch, Clean, and Jerk lifts with assistance exercises that are not usually illustrated in training manuals, that exposed their skills as well as their fitness and mobility.
Mehmed is a great Coach, his vast lifting experience and biomechanical knowledge gives him the ability to immediately see what mistakes and errors are being made, so that he can demonstrate how to correct the movements and explain the anatomical efficiency aspects. The Club coaches recorded video for immediate feedback purpose and further analysis.
After a final Q&A briefing, Mehmed signed the Certificates, and everyone departed feeling well rewarded.

Sited in a new position on the other side of the Lee Valley North Bank our fourth BM competition arrangements worked well and gave the spectators a better place to sit and watch the performance. It also meant that the lifters could warm up without distraction and take a preparatory walk into a dedicated lifting area, which helped them focus their efforts.
